| Kenilworth Castle by John Syer.
Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire was built in the
12th century by Geoffrey de Clinton, treasurer to Henry the first. Besieged
in 1266 by Henry III, when it was held by the rebel Simon de Montfort. The
garrison held our for 6 months and only surrendered when starved.
The Norman keep is the oldest part dating back to 1180. In 1370
onwards it was remodeled by John of Gaunt. In 1575 Elizabeth 1st was
entertained by the then owner Robert Dudley earl of Leister the
festivities continued for 19 days and cost an estimated 19 thousand
pounds.
