Jacques Louis David. was born in Paris
in 1748. His father was a haberdasher who died when Jacques was young.
He was brought up by two uncles one was a architect and other a builder
they fostered his artistic talent. The Artist Boucher became a fried and
influenced him form an early age, and it was on his recommendation that he
began to study under Vien in 1766. and in 1774 after several failures he
gained the Acedemy prize. With this success he moved to Rome where Vien
had just been appointed director of the French Academy. He copied
antiquities with great flare. Italy and especially Rome were an
important turning point for David who turned from being a Rococo artist
tpo a Neoclassicism. returning abck to Paris in 1781 he was accepted
by the Academy and becoming a full member in 1783/ he painted nearly entirely
historical paintings of the classical subjects. In 1785 in the Paris salon
his painting Oath of the Horatii was a huge success with this he took the
painting back to Rome where it to was a huge success. From the outset of
the French revolution David was with the extreme left, where he voted for
the death pf the King and in 1794 he headed the convention to abolish the
Art Academy. But he did most to defend artists and there works, and
many fine painting would not be here today if it was not for David. He
spent some time in orison but soon became a follower of Napoleon
Bonaparte. who appointed him his first painter in 1804. After the fall of Napoleon
David was banished form France so he moved to Brussels where he continued
to paint until the end, he died in 1825. major works by David
