JOHN WILLIAM
GODWARD. A follower
of Alam-Tadema. This group of artists were could the marble School. His
paintings are almost entirely showing women in classical dress. posing in
robes on marble terraces or walled gardens. This Neo Classical subjects
made him one of the leading exponents in this field. But in the 1920's
this style of art fell out of fashion with the leading collectors and
galleries, however, Godward was not one for easily changing his style. He
continued in this style but did not sell many of his paintings which
finally drove him to suicide. His middle class family which disapproved
of his chosen profession and also disapproved in his paintings could not
come to terms with his suicide and destroyed most of his papers and unfortunately,
probably any photos which featured him, as far as we know there are
no photos showing Godward around today. In total The Royal Academy
exhibited a total of 19 paintings between 1886 to 1916. Today his
paintings often sell in excess of £300,000
