Windsor
Castle Morning by Richard Elmore. Victorian artist Richard Elmore's
painting of Windsor Castle, the Royal Castle in Berkshire shown in Victorian
painting, part of a series of paintings of castles of Great Britain.
Windsor castle stands on an isolated chalk hill
overlooking the River Thames. First castle built by William the
Conqueror this position being a days march to London. The round tower,
dating from the 11th century. Henry 1st who reigned between 1100-1105,
held court at Windsor in 1114 and in the 12th century King Henry 2nd who
ruled 1154-1189, enlarged the defensive works and built another defensive
wall within the castle. Further development continued by Edward III who
ruled 1327-77 and this reconstruction is roughly as the castle is today.
In the reign of George IV, the architect Sir Jeffry Wyattville was
employed to reconstruct the keep and upper ward. The keep was heightened
by 30ft and given windows.
