Giovanni Antonio Canaletto, was born
in Venice in 1697 a son of a painter of stage sets. He was trained in the
craft of set painting for the theatre and this was a decisive influence
for his later painting. He went to Rome in 1719 and became friendly with
Veduta painters, Carlevari, Pannini and Vanvitelli. His early works included
topographical scenes and architectural fantasies and ruin Caprici.
Canaletto used sales agents to sell his paintings and many of his fine
works were purchased by British collectors. Due to a growing demand for
his work in England, he came to London to paint London scenes and also the
great houses around Britain. These particular paintings in a lighter and
clearer coloration which from the 1730s he adopted. Much of his style
belongs to the Baroque style but the lighter colorations prepares the way
of the 19th century styles.
