Hauling a Lion Statue to
the Temple by Sir Edward John Poynter
Poynter painted a series of Egyptian themed paintings
as well as Roman scenes. The original water colour, called Israel in
Egypt, for a larger painting was bought by a civil engineer who informed
Poynter that he had not depicted enough slaves to haul the sculpture. This
induced Poynter to paint in several more slaves and also to show an
Egyptian giving water to a collapsed slave in the foreground.
